Sergio Lavandero, a prominent scientist and National Prize winner, is campaigning to become the next rector of the University of Chile. With elections scheduled for May 12, the candidate is pushing for significant institutional changes, most notably a reduction in the length of university degree programs.

Lavandero argues that the current academic structure is outdated, particularly when compared to international models. He specifically highlighted medicine and engineering as fields where the current seven-year or longer timelines could be condensed.

"We have to make deep changes, and we will probably have to shorten university degrees," Lavandero said in an interview. He clarified that he is advocating for a reduction in the number of years required to graduate rather than the elimination of specific programs.

Modernizing Institutional Strategy

Beyond academic length, Lavandero emphasized the need for the institution to anticipate demographic shifts. He noted that the university can no longer rely on the traditional model of students entering between the ages of 18 and 25.

"We are going to receive students of all age groups," Lavandero stated. "We will have students entering and leaving throughout their entire lives." He believes the university must prepare for a more fluid educational path to remain relevant in a changing society.

Lavandero also addressed the academic preparedness of incoming students, citing data from the OECD that points to skill gaps among Chilean graduates. He proposed that the university must bridge these gaps more effectively during the early years of undergraduate study.

This is Lavandero’s second bid for the rector's office. He is competing against at least three other candidates to lead the "Casa de Bello" for the next four years. His platform includes a tougher stance on student occupations and protests, as well as a comprehensive review of the institution's management practices and its relationship with the football club Azul Azul.

As the election approaches, the candidate maintains that the University of Chile has a historic responsibility to set the standard for the country. He argues that by shortening degrees and modernizing management, the university can better address the inequalities prevalent in the national public education system.
