Chile's National Consumer Service (Sernac) issued a safety alert this Friday regarding the risk of accidents involving Thermos brand stainless steel bottles in Chile. The agency warned that a defect in the lids of specific models could lead to user injuries.

The alert directly affects the SK300/0 Stainless King and SK3020 Food Jar models. These products were marketed in the country by the company Importadora y Distribuidora KW SpA between 2018 and 2026.

According to the agency, an estimated 2,000 units of these products are currently held by Chilean consumers. Additionally, a stock of 700 bottles and another 5,000 units have been identified as currently in transit.

The issue stems from a design flaw in the closure mechanism. The company detailed that “some stainless steel bottle lids do not contain a pressure-release valve mechanism.”

This technical defect poses direct physical dangers. The lack of a valve can cause the lid to be forcefully ejected if food or liquids are kept inside longer than recommended, potentially resulting in burns, spills, and impact injuries from the lid being thrown.

While 27 reports of injuries have been recorded in the United States due to this same defect, no cases have been reported in Chile to date. However, the alert specifically applies to imports made between 2018 and 2022.

Sernac specified that imports made after 2022 already include models with lids that feature built-in pressure relief valves. Therefore, the risk is limited to the older batches distributed by the company.

As a preventative measure, Sernac recommended that users stop using these items immediately. Affected users should contact the company via email at contacto@thermoschile.cl to arrange for a replacement lid that includes the appropriate pressure-release valve.
