Chilean Senator Camila Flores, a member of the Renovación Nacional (RN) party, is under investigation by the Valparaíso Regional Prosecutor's Office for alleged fraud against the state. The inquiry stems from an anonymous complaint regarding the management of staff salaries and public resources.
Flores issued a public statement Wednesday denying any wrongdoing. She characterized the investigation as an attack on her reputation and questioned the motives behind the anonymous report.
"I am a brave woman and I will not let myself be intimidated by attempts to affect my honor," Flores said. "I face this situation with the tranquility of someone who has nothing to hide, and with the conviction that the truth always finds a way."
Investigation into public funding
The case, often referred to in local reports as the "Flores quota," centers on potential irregularities in how the senator utilized public funds designated for parliamentary staff. While the case remains under a confidentiality order, Flores confirmed that she is aware of the investigation’s nature.
"Regarding the ongoing investigation, I want to point out that I do not yet know the details of the complaint or its origin, given its confidential nature," Flores noted. "However, based on the information available, it appears to be an anonymous complaint."
The senator suggested that the investigation may involve third parties and hinted at ulterior motives. She claimed that these situations often have "an origin unrelated to the public interest," asserting that these background factors must be clarified as the legal process moves forward.
Despite the gravity of the accusations, Flores pledged full cooperation with the Valparaíso prosecutor’s office. She confirmed her intent to provide all required documentation to the authorities.
"I will collaborate fully with the justice system, handing over all the background information that is requested," Flores said. "I will also exercise, in due course, the corresponding actions to protect my name against baseless accusations."
As of Wednesday, the Prosecutor's Office has not released further details on the specific timeline or the scope of the evidence gathered thus far. The investigation remains in its preliminary stages as officials review the initial allegations.
