Former Finance Minister Mario Marcel addressed the Chamber of Deputies to discuss the country's fiscal situation and criticize opposition proposals.
During his remarks, Marcel acknowledged a "tightness" in fiscal resources but categorically dismissed the idea that the country is facing a crisis.
According to a report by cooperativa.cl, the former Secretary of State used the legislative forum to question the feasibility of budget cut plans proposed by the opposition.
Marcel placed particular emphasis on the proposal to implement across-the-board 3% cuts in all ministries, pointing out the technical and operational difficulties such a measure would entail.
Criticism of Kast's tax reform
The former official also directed his criticism toward the tax policy proposed by José Antonio Kast. Marcel noted that the previous administration's strategy was based on the logic of fiscal balance.
According to the cooperativa.cl report, the former minister pointed out that the previous administration sought to reduce corporate taxes only if such a move was offset by an increase in taxes on higher incomes.
Marcel's stance is particularly significant following confirmation that the current administration's reconstruction project does not include compensation mechanisms to cover deficits.
The former minister's intervention comes at a time of high tension regarding the definition of the national budget and the sustainability of current public policies.
