An individual fired two shots at a guard tower at the Puerto Montt prison early Tuesday morning. The attack occurred after Gendarmerie personnel thwarted an attempt to throw prohibited items into the prison grounds.
The suspect, who was outside the prison complex, was spotted by officers while attempting to breach the perimeter security. Upon being discovered by the guards, the individual pulled out a firearm and fired two shots toward the tower before fleeing the scene.
Security measures reinforced
Following the attack, the regional directorate of the Gendarmerie immediately ordered heightened surveillance measures across the entire perimeter of the facility. The goal is to prevent further attempts to smuggle illicit items and to protect the physical safety of the sentries guarding the unit.
Prison authorities reported that no officers were injured in the shooting. The guards held their positions and activated standard security protocols in response to the armed aggression.
The case has been referred to the Public Prosecutor's Office. The Prosecutor has ordered the necessary investigative steps to identify the shooter and determine their whereabouts.
Forensic teams are currently examining the scene to determine the caliber of the weapon used and to collect ballistic evidence. The Gendarmerie is working closely with police to advance the judicial investigation and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
