Public Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch will lead a meeting of the federal security cabinet in Culiacán this Monday, May 4. The meeting is scheduled to take place at the IX Military Zone headquarters, according to elfinanciero.com.mx.

The meeting aims to address the security situation in the state following recent indictments by the U.S. Department of Justice against officials in Sinaloa. Secretary of National Defense Ricardo Trevilla Trejo and Secretary of the Navy Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles will also be part of the delegation.

Joining the group are National Guard Commander Guillermo Briseño Lobera and State Public Security Secretary Sinuhé Téllez López. Prior to a press conference scheduled for 10:00 a.m., the officials will meet with Sinaloa’s interim governor, Yeraldine Bonilla Valverde.

U.S. Indictments Against Sinaloa Officials

The visit comes amid high political tension. The U.S. Department of Justice has formally named Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya and Morena Senator Enrique Inzun_unza Cazarez, alleging ties to the Sinaloa Cartel.

According to elfinanciero.com.mx, the U.S. government accuses these individuals, along with eight other officials or former officials, of involvement in drug trafficking offenses. The U.S. Justice Department statement, released last Wednesday, April 29, was blunt regarding the allegations.

“The defendants are all high-ranking, current or former, officials of the government and law enforcement of the Mexican state of Sinaloa, including the current governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, and they are accused of conspiring with the Sinaloa Cartel to distribute large quantities of narcotics to the United States,” the Department of Justice stated.

The judicial case has been assigned to Federal Judge Katherine Polk Failla. Meanwhile, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has expressed her intention to maintain federal support to address security issues within the state.

This meeting at the IX Military Zone takes place just two weeks after García Harfuch visited the Sinaloan capital on April 16. During that visit, the Secretary held meetings with business leaders at the Ninth Military Air Zone headquarters.
