Frente Amplio deputies Coca Ñanco and Jaime Bassa have submitted formal requests for clarification to the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and National Defense regarding a recent joint declaration signed by leaders José Antonio Kast and Javier Milei.

The move follows Kast's first official visit to Argentina, during which both presidents signed a document referencing "surrounding maritime spaces." According to reports from biobiochile.cl, the mention of these zones has sparked alarm within the Frente Amplio caucus due to potential implications for Chilean sovereignty.

The lawmakers warn that the language used in the agreement could jeopardize Chile's interests in the southern seas and the Antarctic territory. The primary concern lies in the fact that the ambiguity of the terminology could undermine the State's position in these strategic areas.

Sovereignty Assessment

Deputy Coca Ñanco, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, stated that President Kast's signature on the document could "have concrete consequences."

Meanwhile, Deputy Jaime Bassa, a member of the Defense Committee, questioned the lack of prior consultation processes. The lawmaker noted that "when it comes to sovereignty, declarations are not enough."

Bassa demanded to know whether the Ministry of Defense was consulted and what type of risk assessment was conducted prior to the signing. The legislator emphasized the importance of understanding how this agreement impacts Chile's presence in the southern zone and Antarctica.

The formal inquiry filed by the deputies seeks detailed information on the measures taken to protect the country's sovereign position. They are also requesting a report on the current status of the Chilean presence in the Chilean Antarctic Territory and whether any risk assessments were performed before the meeting between the two leaders.
