Chiguayante Mayor Jorge Lozano has announced that concrete updates regarding the resumption of work to create an underpass at the Santa Sofía crossing—which is currently stalled—will be provided during the month of May.
Lozano traveled to Santiago to meet with Eric Martin, President of the State Railway Company (EFE). The meeting aimed to find solutions to resolve the deadlock regarding the construction of the underpass at this critical junction in the municipality.
The Mayor confirmed that a second meeting between officials is scheduled for the second week of May. During this session, EFE will present the official timeline for resuming work at the intersection.
“This timeline couldn't be provided yet because discussions are still ongoing,” Lozano explained. The Mayor added that, following the meeting, his intention is to “make up for lost time,” noting that progress is being made in rebuilding trust between the two organizations.
Status of the Pinares Crossing
The May meeting will also serve to define the future of the Pinares crossing. Although construction is complete, the infrastructure has not yet been opened for public use.
Lozano assured that technical and operational details regarding the opening of this passage will be revealed at the next meeting. The municipality aims to transition the project from being merely completed to being fully functional for local residents.
Meanwhile, the Chiguayante Municipality is working on delivering a new municipal ordinance to EFE. This document aims to prevent the company from facing massive tax liabilities for constructing on public land.
