Donald Trump has criticized Pope Leo XIV for his recent anti-war messages, triggering a diplomatic rift between the United States and the Vatican. The former president’s remarks targeted the Pope’s stance on global conflict, creating friction between the administration and the Holy See.

The tension follows a social media post from the Trump camp that compared the Pope to Jesus. The imagery was deleted from Trump's official social media accounts after it drew intense backlash from conservative religious groups.

Megan Bashan, a conservative Christian commentator, expressed doubt regarding the President's motives. “I don’t know if the president thought it would be fun,” Bashan wrote regarding the deleted content.

The reaction from the Catholic community was equally sharp. Isabel Brown, a prominent Catholic podcaster, described the publication as "frankly, disgusting and unacceptable."

Brown argued that the post represented a "deeply erroneous reading of the American people experiencing a true and beautiful resurgence of faith in Christ in the middle of our broken culture."

Religious rhetoric as political strategy

Scholars are analyzing the President's use of religious imagery as a calculated maneuver. Jesús Becerril, an academic in the Department of Religious Sciences at Universidad Iberoamericana, suggests the language does not stem from spiritual conviction.

Becerril claims the administration is using faith to serve political ends. “We find ourselves facing a deeply outrageous scenario, in which religion is instrumentalized to justify war, feed hate speech, and legitimize racism and exclusion,” Becerril said in a statement released by the university.

The Pope, who was born in Chicago and elected in May 2025, has frequently pushed back against specific Trump administration decisions. Despite the friction, Leo XIV has attempted to keep diplomatic channels open.

Speaking to reporters while traveling to Algeria, the Pope sought to move away from the political conflict. "I am not a politician, I have no intention of entering into a debate with him," the Pope stated.

He emphasized that his primary focus remains his religious mandate. "The message remains the same: to promote peace," the Pope said.

The Pope concluded by asserting his resolve against political pressure. "I am not afraid, neither of the Trump administration, nor of proclaiming the message of the Gospel aloud," Leo XIV said.
