Pope Leo XIV is set to make a historic visit to Algeria, a move intended to promote interfaith dialogue and peace across the region.

Father Fred Wekesa, Rector of the Basilica of Saint Augustine in Annaba, says the papal visit brings a message of hope to local communities. Wekesa, who has lived in Algeria for over a decade, aims to challenge outdated narratives of violence associated with the country's 1990s conflict.

He argues that the current reality in Algeria is one of coexistence and tolerance. Wekesa believes that religious dialogue must move beyond official institutions and penetrate the fabric of daily life and families.

A call for global diplomacy

Wekesa maintains that dialogue remains the most effective path toward peace in both local societies and global politics. He expressed particular encouragement regarding the Pope's presence in their tight-knit community.

However, the visit coincides with friction between the Vatican and the United States. The US president recently criticized the Pontiff's recent message, which included a call to end all global wars.

Addressing the political backlash, Wekesa suggested the US leader may lack an understanding of the Pope's mission. "Violence cannot resolve anything," Wekesa noted, adding that the US president "does not understand the agenda of peace."
