Jihadist and separatist forces in Mali have launched a massive military offensive aimed at toppling the country's ruling junta, according to a report by France 24.

The campaign, which has been underway for over a week, has already resulted in the death of Mali’s defense minister on the first day of the assault.

Rebel fighters have successfully seized a strategic military stronghold in the northern region of the country. Following this victory, the insurgents are now attempting to blockade the capital city, Bamako.

Escalating conflict in Mali

The military situation continues to deteriorate as the junta appears to be entrenching its position without a clear political resolution. The offensive marks a significant escalation in the ongoing instability within the nation.

France 24 terrorism expert Wassim Nasr provided analysis on the latest developments regarding the rebel's movement toward the capital. The report indicates that the junta's hold on power is being directly challenged by the coordinated movement of these armed groups.
