The final group of Kenyan police officers deployed to Haiti has left the country, according to a Haitian source confirmed Tuesday.

Kenya led the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS), a security initiative approved by the UN Security Council in late 2023. The mission aimed to assist Haiti's overwhelmed police force in reclaiming territory from powerful armed groups.

Despite the deployment, the security mission failed to neutralize the threat posed by local gangs. According to a report by France 24, armed groups remain in control of significant portions of the country and continue to exert devastating violence across Haiti.

Transition of security operations

The departure of the Kenyan contingent occurs as another UN-approved operation begins its implementation in the region.

The MSS was designed to provide much-needed stability to the Caribbean nation, which has struggled with widespread gang-led instability. However, the recent withdrawal marks the end of the Kenyan-led phase of this specific security effort.
