Hungarian opposition wins supermajority as Orbán's 16-year rule ends
The Hungarian Parliament

The Hungarian opposition has decisively defeated Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, ending his 16-year tenure in power. The conservative Tisza party, led by Péter Magyar, secured a two-thirds majority in the recent legislative elections.

This supermajority allows the new parliamentary bloc to dismantle the legal frameworks and 'super-majority' rules that previously guaranteed Fidesz's dominance. According to analysis by Alfredo Joignant, the victory provides the tools necessary to dismantle the corrupt structural arrangements established by the Orbán administration.

In Budapest, the Chain Bridge was illuminated in the green, white, and red of the Hungarian flag following the announcement. Supporters of Magyar celebrated the results, describing a sense of national reclamation.

“Lo logramos,” Magyar said during his victory speech. “Derrocamos al régimen de Orbán; juntos liberamos Hungría. ¡Recuperamos nuestra patria! ¡Gracias! ¡Gracias a todos!”

One voter, identified as Zofia, shared her reaction to the historic turnout. “Lloré cuando marqué la X en mi papeleta,” she said. “Todavía no lo creo. ¡Pero lo hicimos!”

Geopolitical shifts and US tensions

The electoral shift in Hungary serves as a significant blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin. As reported by El Mostrador, Orbán had frequently acted as a pro-Russian ally within the European Union, delaying sanctions and blocking essential EU loans to Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a congratulatory message to Hungary shortly after the results were finalized. The loss of Orbán's influence is seen as a direct gain for Ukraine's survival efforts.

Simultaneously, political tensions have flared in the United States between President Donald Trump and Pope Leo XIV. The friction stems from the Pope's criticism regarding the war in Iran and its promotion under religious pretenses.

Trump attacked the Pope's leadership, labeling him “débil ante la delictiva y pésimo en política exterior” (weak on crime and terrible in foreign policy) and urging him to “espabilarse” (wake up). Trump further criticized the Pontiff for following the lead of the “izquierda radical” (radical left).

In response, Pope Leo XIV stated that he does not fear Trump, asserting that his message remains one of peace. The dispute escalated after Trump posted an image on social media portraying himself as a Christ-like figure healing a patient.
