Chilean National Prosecutor Ángel Valencia met with Chinese Prosecutor General Ying Yong in Shanghai on Monday to strengthen bilateral cooperation against organized crime.

The meeting took place while Valencia participated in the Executive Committee of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP).

According to the National Prosecutor's Office, the discussions focused on advancing a bilateral agreement for legal assistance. Officials also addressed the necessity of intensifying joint operations to combat rising crime rates across the Pacific.

Specialized Criminal Cooperation

Valencia also held talks with Liu Zhiyuan, the Director of International Cooperation for the Chinese Prosecutor's Office.

The two officials emphasized the importance of establishing direct communication channels between specialized units. These channels will focus on intelligence sharing regarding drug trafficking, organized crime, and economic offenses.

Valencia noted that his participation in the IAP allows Chile to "collect good practices, improve our procedures, and strengthen the training of our teams."

He stated that these international efforts contribute to improving service quality for Chilean citizens and strengthening collective crime-fighting efforts.

The Chilean prosecutor also highlighted the importance of maintaining strong relations with China to protect national economic interests.

"To protect our economy, it is necessary to safeguard the prestige of our ports and prevent trade routes from being used for illicit activities," Valencia said.

He added that China's experience in managing criminal finance and smuggling makes the partnership "especially valuable" for Chile.
