A coordinated militant assault on a police checkpoint in the Bannu district of northwestern Pakistan resulted in at least 15 fatalities on Sunday, May 10, 2026. The attack, which took place near the Afghan border, began with the detonation of a car bomb that reduced the police post to rubble.

Following the initial explosion, gunmen stormed the site and engaged security forces in a sustained firefight. According to officials, the attackers utilized small drones during the raid, marking a notable tactical development in the region's ongoing security challenges.

Local authorities confirmed that the blast left mangled vehicles scattered across the area, indicating the significant force of the explosive device. In addition to the 15 confirmed deaths, officials reported that at least three other individuals were wounded during the exchange of fire.

While Al Jazeera initially reported that "more than a dozen" people had been killed in the incident, France 24 provided the more specific figure of 15 confirmed fatalities. The site of the attack remains under investigation by local security services, and as of Sunday, no group had claimed responsibility for the operation.

The Bannu district, situated in close proximity to the Afghan frontier, has been a frequent theater for militant activity. Security forces continue to assess the damage to the checkpoint infrastructure as they process the scene of the attack.
