Al Jazeera Mubasher correspondent Mohammed Wishah was killed Wednesday in an Israeli drone strike in the Gaza Strip. The strike occurred on al-Rashid Street, a coastal road west of Gaza City, when the vehicle Wishah was traveling in was hit, causing it to burst into flames.

Al Jazeera Media Network issued a statement condemning the killing as a "heinous crime." The network described the strike as a "flagrant violation of all international laws and norms," asserting that the incident was a targeted act aimed at silencing journalists.

“As Al Jazeera mourns its correspondent Mohammed Wishah, who joined the Network in 2018, it affirms that his killing was not a random act but a deliberate and targeted crime intended to intimidate journalists and prevent them from carrying out their professional duties,” the statement read.

Concerns over systematic targeting

The Gaza Government Media Office reported that the death of Wishah brings the number of journalists killed in Israeli attacks since October 2023 to at least 262. Officials in Gaza characterized the event as part of a broader, systematic campaign to assassinate Palestinian media workers.

Reporting from Gaza City, Al Jazeera’s Ibrahim al-Khalili noted that the strike occurred on a main transit route, further illustrating the volatility of the region. He emphasized that the killing took place despite the existing US-brokered ceasefire, which has seen nearly 2,000 reported violations according to the Gaza Government Media Office.

"The situation is getting much more dire in light of the ongoing Israeli military’s ceasefire violations," al-Khalili said. He added that Wishah had been covering the conflict since its inception.

The Gaza Government Media Office has appealed to international organizations, including the International Federation of Journalists and the Arab Journalists Union, to take action. They are calling for increased pressure to protect journalists and for the prosecution of those responsible in international courts.

Since the start of the conflict in October 2023, more than 72,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip. According to data from the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 733 Palestinians have been killed and over 2,000 injured in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire agreement took effect.
