Representative Jaime Bassa announced that the Chamber of Deputies' Environment Committee will launch a formal inquiry to the Ministry of the Environment following the ratification of the Maratué real estate project in the commune of Puchuncaví, Valparaíso region.

The decision by the Committee of Ministers upheld the Environmental Qualification Resolution (RCA) originally granted in October 2024. This move effectively dismisses the legal challenges filed against the initiative, which aims to construct 14,000 homes over a 45-year period.

Bassa harshly criticized the resolution, calling it "bad news" for the region. He noted that the approval directly impacts an environmentally sensitive area classified as an "environmental sacrifice zone."

Corporate interests prioritized over environmental protection

The lawmaker argued that the decision demonstrates a "clear priority to favor construction companies." Speaking to Radio Bío Bío, he added that the project also involves the withdrawal of 42 decrees from the Comptroller General's Office.

"I find the Committee of Ministers' decision to be brutally irresponsible," the deputy stated. He added that, in the face of the current climate crisis, economic development must be compatible with environmental protection.

The Maratué project plans for the construction of 300 housing units annually. Of this total, at least 2,000 homes will be funded through Serviu subsidies.

Following the confirmation of the works, Bassa vowed to demand compliance with biodiversity and priority site protection laws. The parliamentary committee will seek detailed explanations from environmental authorities regarding the validation of the RCA.
