UC forward Justo Giani expressed deep frustration following his team's defeat in the university derby against La U, admitting the squad surrendered too much control during the opening period.
Speaking in the mixed zone after the match on April 26, 2026, the Argentine striker was critical of the team's initial approach. According to biobiochile.cl, Giani noted that the first half was far from the intended game plan.
“It hurts us. We know the first half was not good at all; that was not the idea of how to go out and play,” Giani said.
While the player noted a significant shift in momentum during the second half, the damage from the early deficit proved too much to overcome. Giani noted that despite having opportunities, the team could not convert them into goals.
“The second half was all ours. We had situations, we tried by all means, but it just wouldn't go in. Well, when you give away a half, it is difficult,” Giani stated.
Looking toward Copa Libertadores
Giani highlighted that the team struggled to find gaps in the defense, which led to the opponent scoring. He emphasized that the squad must address these tactical errors immediately as they prepare for upcoming continental competition.
“We couldn't find the spaces, they scored against us, and we rushed. These are things we are going to look at during the week; we have to think about the Copa Libertadores. We are hurting,” Giani told the press.
Despite the emotional weight of the loss, the forward urged his teammates to maintain consistency. He pointed to the team's ability to dominate the latter stages of the match as a foundation for improvement.
“We have to be more consistent. I don't want to say anything while emotions are high, but what I felt was that in the second half we did things well,” he added.
With a quick turnaround approaching, the club must prepare for international competition. Giani noted that the schedule leaves little room for error as they transition back to continental play.
“We are lucky to play international cup; there are other teams that have to wait until the next weekend, but we don't. We have a quick rematch. We have to hold onto the second half, which was good. I had two situations; we have to take hold of that and correct it,” Giani concluded.
