Chilean football icon Iván Zamorano expressed his grief this week following the death of his former Inter Milan manager, Mircea Lucescu. The Romanian coach, who led the Serie A side during the 1998-1999 season, passed away on Tuesday.

Zamorano, a former striker for La Roja, remembered the coach as a transformative figure during his time in Italy. He credited Lucescu with fostering a positive environment that allowed players to thrive under pressure.

A legacy of motivation

In an interview with La Tercera, Zamorano described his former mentor as a "pure motivator." He emphasized that Lucescu possessed a unique ability to read the emotional state of his squad.

"Lucescu was an extraordinary person," Zamorano said. "He was a guy who managed practically every sensation of football."

Beyond his man-management skills, the Chilean forward highlighted the tactical identity Lucescu installed at Inter. Zamorano noted that he deeply valued the coach’s commitment to an aggressive, attacking style of play.

"He drew you into a football philosophy that I loved because it was very offensive," Zamorano told the publication. "I believe a great human being and a very good football coach has left us."

Zamorano also reflected on the personal connection Lucescu maintained with his athletes. According to the former striker, the coach always knew the right words to say to alter the momentum of a match or boost team morale.

"He was a person who had the right phrase to change any situation," Zamorano said. "But, above all, the closeness he had with the players was extraordinary."

Lucescu’s death marks the loss of one of European football's most storied tactical minds. For Zamorano, who played under the coach during a pivotal chapter in his career, the passing is a significant personal blow.
