Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong, 20, was killed in a shooting during an armed robbery targeting his team's bus following a match in Ghana. The Berekum Chelsea striker died after being caught in the crossfire during an attack on the highway between Bibiani and Goaso.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the death in a statement released Monday. The association noted that police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Armed men blocked the road near Ahyiresu to carry out the robbery. During the ensuing struggle, Frimpong sustained a gunshot wound that left him critically injured.
Medical staff at a hospital in Bibiani, located in northwest Ghana, eventually certified the player's death. The attack occurred as the team was traveling back from a first-division match against FC Samartex.
GFA pledges security review
The GFA expressed "deep consternation and sadness" over the loss of the player, whom the federation described as "a promising young talent" in Ghanaian football.
Following the tragedy, the federation committed to reviewing and strengthening security protocols for clubs traveling for national competitions. The goal of these new measures is to prevent similar incidents from occurring during away fixtures.
"We urge that all necessary measures be taken to ensure that justice is served," the GFA statement read.
Frimpong joined Berekum Chelsea earlier this year on loan from Aduana Stars. During his thirteen appearances for the club, the forward scored two goals.
