Chilean-Peruvian goalkeeper Miguel Vargas has secured the starting position at Universitario de Deportes, heading into a high-stakes Copa Libertadores matchup against Coquimbo Unido this Tuesday.

Vargas, known as 'Manotas,' enters the continental tournament following a string of four consecutive starts where he maintained a clean sheet for the Lima-based side.

His recent standout performance came during the club's Libertadores debut against Deportes Tolima in Ibagué. Vargas recorded four critical saves to ensure a draw for the 'crema' squad.

"The team is committing to the work of keeping a clean sheet," Vargas said following the result in Colombia. He added that while the team will evaluate the group stage later, the single point is a significant achievement.

From Chilean youth prospect to Peruvian mainstay

Vargas, a product of Universidad Católica's youth system, previously represented Chile at the 2015 South American U-20 Championship. During that tournament, he competed for the starting spot against future Chilean international Brayan Cortés.

After stints with Chilean clubs including Cobresal and Unión La Clara, Vargas found professional stability in Peru. He played for Cienciano and Deportivo Garcilaso before making the jump to Universitario for the 2025 campaign.

Following the departure of Uruguayan goalkeeper Sebastián Britos to Peñarol, Vargas beat out Peruvian international Diego Romero for the starting role. Spanish manager Javier Rabanal has noted that rotation in the goalkeeper position remains a key tactical element.

Beyond his club success, the 29-year-old is eyeing a future with the Peruvian national team. Vargas confirmed his interest in being considered for the 'Bicolor' squad under new manager Mano Menezes.

"It is an opportunity and an honor to be considered by the Peruvian national team," Vargas stated. He noted that his move to Peru was a deliberate project to place himself on the radar for eligibility.
