Chile's women's tennis team has secured its place in the Americas Group I of the Billie Jean King Cup after defeating Colombia 2-0 in Ibagué.

The victory on Colombian soil allowed the Chilean players to avoid relegation to Group II, following a difficult group stage in which Team Chile failed to earn any points against Argentina, Peru, and Brazil.

Fernanda Labraña opened the day with a strong performance, defeating Valentina Mediorreal 6-1, 7-5. The win for the Chilean player, ranked 426th in the WTA, provided the first decisive point of the tie.

Antonia Vergara’s Major Upset

Survival was officially sealed by Antonia Vergara’s comeback victory over Colombia's Emiliana Arango, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. The result stood as one of the tournament's biggest upsets, as Vergara defeated a rival ranked in the world's Top 100.

The victory for Vergara, ranked 400th in the WTA, was instrumental in clinching the tie and relegating the home team to Americas Group II.

“It had been a difficult week for me. I had fallen a bit short in my other matches, but I gave everything I had to contribute to the team,” Vergara said after her match.

After the singles victories were secured, both teams agreed not to play the doubles match, ending the confrontation with a win for the Chilean side.
