Bantam Books, the United States publisher of George R.R. Martin’s "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, has debunked circulating rumors regarding a 2026 release date for "The Winds of Winter."

The speculation gained significant momentum on social media following posts from a prominent leaker. These posts suggested that the sixth novel in the saga, which served as the basis for the HBO series "Game of Thrones," would arrive within the next two years.

The news caused a brief wave of hope among the global fanbase, but the publisher moved quickly to correct the record. Bantam Books addressed the claims directly to Entertainment Weekly, stating that "the rumors circulating on the internet about a possible leak are false."

The speculation took hold as various media outlets began amplifying the information, giving the unverified date a sense of legitimacy. This cycle of reports led many readers to believe a long-awaited announcement was imminent.

Ongoing delays for the saga

The denial follows a period of intense speculation that had gripped readers of the fantasy epic. While the 2026 date lacks official backing, Martin’s own recent comments provide a glimpse into his current writing process and the hurdles he faces.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter this past January, Martin shared his difficulties in balancing various professional commitments. He expressed a desire to prioritize the sixth installment of his series, despite the distractions of other projects.

"If I could get rid of some of these other things, I could finish 'The Winds of Winter' quite soon," Martin said. He noted that while the project is his priority, his progress remains uncertain. "I don't know. Sometimes I am not in the mood for that."

Despite the lengthy delays, the author remains committed to the conclusion of the series. Martin admitted he would be "horrified" if another writer were tasked with completing the saga.

The wait for new material has already spanned more than a decade. It has been 15 years since the publication of "A Dance with Dragons" in 2011.

The gap between installments has become a defining characteristic of the series' history. Since the 2011 release of "A Dance with Dragons," fans have navigated years of uncertainty regarding the fate of the remaining books.

Martin has also previously promised a seventh and final volume titled "A Dream of Spring." For now, however, the release date for the next chapter remains unconfirmed.
