Mexico City’s Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) has issued an urgent alert warning music fans of a surge in digital scams targeting concert-goers. Authorities report that criminals are using sophisticated phishing schemes to harvest personal data and credentials from unsuspecting victims.

The scams typically circulate on social media, messaging apps, and email. These messages promise exclusive access to tickets, unpublished content, or special promotions reserved for "true fans."

How the phishing traps work

Once a user clicks a link in one of these messages, they are redirected to a fraudulent website. These portals are designed to mimic the appearance of official ticket vendors or artist management pages.

"Cybercriminals take advantage of the enthusiasm of fans and the speed with which information travels on the internet to spread links to fake portals," the SSC’s Cyber Police unit stated in a release.

When a user enters their information into these sites, they unknowingly hand over passwords, email addresses, and banking credentials. Scammers then use this data to drain financial accounts or sell the stolen information on illicit markets. In some cases, the perpetrators impersonate artists or representatives to increase the credibility of the ruse.

The SSC Cyber Police urged the public to exercise caution by avoiding suspicious links and verifying the URL of any site before entering personal data. They also recommend enabling two-step verification across all personal accounts to provide an extra layer of security.

Authorities are asking citizens to report any suspicious messages or websites immediately. Reports can be filed by calling 55 5242 5100, extension 5086, or by emailing policia.cibernetica@ssc.cdmx.gob.mx. Residents can also contact the SSC through their official social media channels.
