Huawei is expanding its footprint in the Mexican market with the launch of the MatePad Mini, an 8.8-inch tablet designed to compete directly with Apple’s iPad Mini. The device will be available starting April 20 through Huawei’s online store and physical retail locations.
The company is offering two distinct configurations. The base model features a standard display with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage for 12,999 pesos. A premium version, equipped with Huawei’s proprietary PaperMatte display, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage, will retail for 14,999 pesos.
A focus on portability and display tech
The MatePad Mini centers on an 8.8-inch flexible OLED screen with a 2.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The device weighs only 255 grams and measures 5.1 mm in thickness, emphasizing its role as a portable productivity tool.
Huawei is heavily promoting the PaperMatte version of the display, which uses a specialized coating to reduce glare and simulate the tactile feel of paper. According to the company, this feature is intended to improve both readability and writing comfort for users. The tablet also includes a dedicated ebook mode that converts the interface to black and white to minimize eye strain.
Creativity remains a core pillar of the hardware, with the device offering full support for the third-generation M-Pencil. Huawei has bundled the tablet with software suites such as GoPaint for digital artistry and a note-taking application that supports handwriting recognition. The system can even perform complex tasks like digitalizing and solving handwritten mathematical equations.
While Huawei has not disclosed the specific processor powering the device, it confirmed that all units ship with HarmonyOS 4.3.0. The tablet features a 50-megapixel primary rear camera and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide sensor. For video conferencing, the company integrated a 32-megapixel front-facing camera paired with a dual-microphone system designed to enhance voice clarity.
Powering the experience is a 6,400 mAh battery that supports 66W SuperCharge technology. Huawei claims the device can provide up to 16 hours of battery life on a single charge. The tablet will be available in black and green colorways, with various accessory bundles—including cases and styluses—expected to arrive alongside the hardware launch.
