Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn has decided against mandating the use of artificial intelligence for work tasks following pushback from his staff, according to recent statements.

Speaking on the Silicon Valley Girl podcast, von Ahn explained that the company moved away from a compulsory AI integration policy after employees expressed dissatisfaction with the idea of being forced to use the technology.

Von Ahn addressed the internal friction regarding how much the company should rely on automated tools for daily operations. He noted that the decision to step back from a mandate was a direct response to the concerns raised by the workforce.

Employee autonomy in tech integration

While many tech firms are currently pushing for total AI integration across all departments, Duolingo's leadership opted for a more flexible approach. The CEO indicated that the company would not force employees to use AI 'just because.'

This shift reflects a growing tension within the tech industry regarding how much human oversight should remain in the development of educational tools. The company's stance prioritizes employee preference over a top-down technological mandate.

By allowing staff to decide when AI is appropriate for their specific roles, von Ahn aims to maintain productivity without compromising the professional autonomy of his engineers and content creators.
