Modern data center infrastructure.

Alibaba recently opened a new data center powered entirely by domestic artificial intelligence chips, signaling a major shift in China's technology sector. This move aligns with a broader national effort to build massive computing infrastructure independent of American hardware suppliers like Nvidia.

Last month, a separate facility began operations using Huawei’s Ascend 910C AI processors. Industry analysts now identify the Ascend 910C as a direct competitor to Nvidia’s high-end solutions within the Chinese market.

A surging domestic market

The expansion of these facilities reflects aggressive growth in China’s data center industry. A report from Mordor Intelligence valued the sector at $13 billion in 2020 and projects that figure to reach $36 billion by 2026. This represents a compound annual growth rate of 19.2 percent.

Major domestic players are driving this infrastructure boom. Companies including Alibaba, Tencent, China Telecom, and Huawei are constructing massive data centers across the country. These projects include unconventional installations, such as the nation’s first underwater data center recently opened in Shanghai.

This shift toward domestic technology contrasts sharply with the hardware reliance seen in the United States. By integrating homegrown processors into large-scale cloud operations, Chinese firms aim to insulate their AI development from potential international supply chain disruptions.
