A Collaborative Effort for Safe Travel
On March 18, 2026, the National Institute of Migration (INM) officially launched its seasonal "Heroínas y Héroes Paisanos de Semana Santa" (Holy Week Heroines and Heroes) operation. The initiative is designed to facilitate the safe and orderly transit of Mexican nationals returning home from abroad to visit family during the upcoming Easter holiday period.
The launch ceremony was led by Sergio Salomón Céspedes, head of the National Institute of Migration, who was joined by the Governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara. The presence of high-level officials underscores the importance of the program, which serves as a vital support network for the millions of Mexicans who travel across the border to reunite with their loved ones during one of the country’s most significant cultural and religious observances.
Youth Integration in Public Service
A notable development in this year’s iteration of the program is the active participation of beneficiaries from the "Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro" (Youth Building the Future) scholarship program. By involving these young participants, the INM aims to provide essential administrative and logistical support at key entry points, including airports, bus stations, and land border crossings, while simultaneously offering the youth valuable experience in public service and humanitarian coordination.
"The integration of these scholarship recipients is a strategic move to strengthen our operational capacity," officials noted during the announcement. These young individuals will serve as points of contact for travelers, helping to streamline entry processes and providing information regarding rights and services available to returning citizens.
Ensuring a Smooth Transit
The "Paisano" program has long been a cornerstone of Mexican migration policy, serving to protect the rights of Mexican nationals and prevent harassment or extortion during their travels. As the Holy Week season approaches, the influx of travelers is expected to be significant, necessitating a robust presence from government agencies to ensure that the journey remains secure.
In addition to the personnel deployment, the initiative focuses on providing clear guidance to travelers regarding customs regulations and travel safety. By deploying teams across various states, the INM seeks to minimize wait times and ensure that the "Paisanos"—the term of endearment for Mexicans living abroad—receive the assistance they require upon their arrival back in the country.
As the operation moves into full swing, authorities have expressed their commitment to maintaining a welcoming environment for all travelers, reinforcing the bond between those who have migrated and the home they return to during the spring holidays.
