United States Special Envoy Steve Witkoff reported holding "productive and constructive meetings" with Russian Special Envoy Kirill Dmitriev in Florida on Saturday, according to a statement Witkoff posted on X. This high-level engagement occurs just one day before Washington is set to host the second round of US-mediated discussions between Russian and Ukrainian representatives in Abu Dhabi. Witkoff expressed encouragement that Moscow is actively working toward securing a resolution for the conflict.

The Florida meeting included key figures from the US administration involved in the peace efforts, specifically Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and White House adviser. Details regarding the substance of the discussions between Witkoff and Dmitriev were not publicly disclosed by either delegation. Dmitriev has recently engaged US negotiators multiple times, including a prior meeting in Miami in December and during the World Economic Forum in Davos last month.

These bilateral discussions set the stage for the anticipated talks in the United Arab Emirates, which aim to advance a US-backed proposal to halt hostilities. The first US-mediated session in Abu Dhabi last week marked the first public, direct negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv since the initial phases of the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that further talks might be postponed until the following week, pending updated information from the US mediators.

Geopolitical momentum appears to be building, following President Trump’s recent assertion that the parties are approaching a potential agreement to conclude the fighting. Furthermore, Trump announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin consented to a temporary pause in strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure during extreme cold weather, a concession described as "very nice" by the US President.

The Kremlin confirmed Putin's agreement to the temporary de-escalation request concerning energy targets, a measure welcomed by Kyiv. President Zelenskyy noted that such de-escalation steps are crucial for achieving tangible progress toward ending the war. Reports indicated neither side struck energy infrastructure targets from Thursday night onward, adhering to the temporary understanding.

However, significant obstacles remain before a comprehensive agreement can be realized, according to diplomatic sources. Key sticking points involve Russia's demand for Ukrainian forces to withdraw from approximately one-fifth of the Donetsk region and the required deployment structure for international peacekeeping forces post-conflict.
