Amid rising fears of a military clash between Washington and Tehran, several nations, particularly those bordering Iran, are undertaking significant diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing an escalation to open warfare. These diplomatic sprints follow renewed threats from the US President concerning military intervention if Iran does not halt its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

US Central Command confirmed the deployment of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to the Middle East to bolster regional security and stability, reinforcing recent warnings issued by the US President. Tehran, however, has publicly rejected negotiating under the threat of attack, asserting that its immediate priority is maintaining 200 percent readiness for national defense, according to senior negotiator Kazem Gharibabadi.

Iran is simultaneously pursuing diplomatic channels, focusing on galvanizing regional partners to lobby against potential US intervention, noted Professor Shahram Akbarzadeh of Deakin University. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Istanbul for high-level discussions with Turkish leadership, emphasizing the strengthening of ties with neighboring states based on shared interests.

Key regional actors are signaling resistance to becoming a launchpad for conflict, a development that could impact global stability. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman explicitly stated the Kingdom would not permit its airspace or territory to be used for military actions against Iran. The UAE has reportedly issued similar assurances, according to analyses concerning regional security.

Regional security concerns are directly linked to global economic interests, as instability threatens vital oil supply chains, which would subsequently ripple through the global economy, impacting the US as well. Professor Akbarzadeh suggested that making clear the adverse business impact of regional insecurity might influence the US President’s calculus.

Meanwhile, major non-regional powers are voicing caution against military adventurism. China’s representative to the UN stated that the use of force cannot resolve issues and urged the US to avoid exacerbating tensions. Russia also indicated that negotiation mechanisms remain viable and called for international restraint to prevent chaos across the region.

Iran has also signaled continued military modernization, announcing the addition of one thousand new strategic drones to its armed forces this week. Army Commander Amir Hamati stated this measure is proportionate to the threats facing the nation and ensures a decisive response to aggression.
