Ten vehicle manufacturers account for the bulk of economic activity within Mexico's automotive sector, generating 2.6 trillion pesos in revenue during 2024. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), this industry represents 4.6% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
This subsector ranks as the third most significant contributor to the national economy, surpassed only by real estate services and construction. The operations of these automakers support more than 113,000 direct jobs and drive an export-oriented manufacturing network.
Drivers of the national economy
General Motors de México tops the list with 654 billion pesos in revenue and a workforce of 28,264 employees. The company operates nine plants across states such as Coahuila, San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato, and the State of Mexico, with an annual production capacity of over 846,000 vehicles.
Stellantis Mexico ranks second in revenue, bringing in 377.97 billion pesos. The group, which includes brands such as Jeep, Ram, and Chrysler, employs 16,000 people and operates three industrial plants in Nuevo León and the State of Mexico.
Ford Motor Company maintains a long-standing presence in the country with operations in Sonora, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, and the State of Mexico. The company has a production capacity of 683,920 vehicles and serves as a cornerstone for engine and transmission manufacturing.
Toyota Motor de México generates 290 billion pesos annually through its plants in Baja California and Guanajuato. Its production focuses primarily on exporting the Tacoma pickup to the North American market.
Nissan, with a history dating back to 1961, has concentrated its manufacturing in Aguascalientes following the closure of its CIVAC complex in Morelos. The company produces 750,108 units annually and manufactures engines to supply the global market.
Volkswagen is also among the leading automakers, with operations in Puebla and Silao. The Puebla plant serves as a strategic global hub where models such as the Jetta, Tiguan, and Taos are manufactured.
KIA Mexico rounds out the group of top operators, with revenues of 210 billion pesos. Its plant in Pesquería, Nuevo León, produces 249,000 units annually, primarily destined for North America.
