Mexico’s Tax Administration Service (SAT) issued a formal warning this week urging taxpayers to use only official communication channels to prevent digital tax fraud. The agency reminded users that it never requests confidential information through phone calls, direct messages, or non-official electronic platforms.
All official tax procedures and notifications must occur exclusively through the SAT’s Tax Mailbox (Buzón Tributario), its verified website, or its authorized social media accounts. The authority emphasized that any communication outside these systems should be treated as a potential security risk.
Protecting personal data
To facilitate legitimate inquiries, the SAT maintains the MarcaSAT phone line at 55 6272 2728 and a one-on-one chat service. Both options remain open to the public from Monday to Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The agency also operates verified accounts on Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube to disseminate information and provide taxpayer guidance.
Officials identified several red flags that suggest a fraud attempt. These include poor spelling, unusual email addresses, or links that redirect users to domains outside the official government portal. Fraudsters often use these tactics to create a false sense of urgency, pressuring victims to act quickly without verifying the source.
The SAT explicitly advised taxpayers to avoid downloading attachments from unknown senders. Furthermore, the agency cautioned against providing personal or financial data unless the authenticity of the request has been confirmed through the official website.
Maintaining updated contact information within the Tax Mailbox is essential, as this remains the primary, secure path for interaction with the authority. The SAT noted that this system features specific security mechanisms designed to protect sensitive fiscal information from unauthorized access.
Ultimately, the agency stressed that preventing fraud requires a collective effort between the government and the public. By reporting suspicious communications, citizens help the SAT identify new criminal patterns and reinforce broader protection measures. While the institution continues to upgrade its own digital security systems, it maintains that individual caution remains the most effective defense against financial loss.
