Oxio is set to acquire Telefónica México in a deal aimed at transforming the country's telecommunications landscape. The move highlights the strategic shifts traditional carriers must undertake in the face of emerging satellite and new operating models.

Mexico's antitrust regulator, COFECE, will review the transaction to determine its approval. The authority will assess whether the acquisition impacts fair competition within the connectivity sector.

Jesús Romo, a telecommunications specialist and analyst at GlobalData, noted that Oxio’s model acts as an enabler for Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs). This framework operates similarly to the model already established in the United States market.

The company's strategy facilitates the rise of new competitors in specific niches, such as the fintech sector. Simultaneously, Oxio aims to enter the wholesale market directly—a segment currently dominated by Telcel, AT&T, and Altán.

Challenging the Wholesale Market

The deal represents a strategic opportunity for the firm, which already operates in the United States. Oxio aims to leverage regional synergies to strengthen its network infrastructure and expand its reach.

As part of the Telefónica acquisition, the company will maintain agreements to use AT&T's infrastructure through 2030. It is also considering agreements with other operators to optimize the experience for potential customers.

Romo noted that the arrival of this new player signals a reconfiguration of the national industry. The convergence of traditional, satellite, and digital-native platforms is redefining the rules of connectivity.

“In the medium term, Oxio could even become a direct competitor to current wholesalers. However, Oxio's greatest challenge will undoubtedly be defining its relaunch and differentiating itself from dominant players like Telcel, AT&T, and Bait,” the specialist stated.

The digitalization of operating models and the consolidation of MVNOs are pillars of this new era. The scalability of its cloud-centric model and the response from dominant operators will determine the company's future trajectory in Mexico.
