Only 4% of Mexicans purchase pre-paid funeral insurance, according to a report by expansion.mx. This low figure stands in stark contrast to the economic advantages offered by preventive plans over immediate, at-need services.
Funeral service costs in the country vary significantly depending on the type of provider. According to industry executive Oscar Padilla, there are three primary price tiers.
Services subsidized by institutions such as IMSS or ISSSTE range between 9,000 and 12,000 pesos. Meanwhile, local or neighborhood funeral homes charge between 13,000 and 21,000 pesos.
In the segment of major funeral chains, such as J. García López or Gayosso, prices start at 22,000 pesos and can reach as high as 150,000 to 200,000 pesos per service.
The Benefits of Planning Ahead
Securing a future plan allows for savings of up to 35% compared to services contracted at the time of death. Additionally, these policies often offer monthly financing options.
Elena, a customer in the industry, shared her experience with Gayosso. She purchased her plan in 2021, just as the pandemic was winding down.
“They told me that packages had become much more expensive, but they offered me a discount and a monthly payment plan. It was 36 monthly installments of approximately 1,500 to 1,550 pesos each, and I finished paying it off in 2024,” she recounted.
Once a plan is fully paid, costs are typically locked in. According to Padilla, users are not required to make additional payments unless they choose to add services not included in the original agreement.
“Once you pay for the plan, the price is frozen: you don't have to pay anything else and the service remains valid. We have clients who bought their plans as far back as 1981,” Padilla stated.
These services are often designed for families, allowing coverage to be extended to more members of the immediate household.
Before signing any contract, the CEO of J. García López recommends verifying the legitimacy of the company. It is essential to confirm that the entity has a real physical address and no history of complaints filed with the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco).
