Codelco Chairman Máximo Pacheco has confirmed he will remain at the helm of the Nova Andino joint venture until 2027. Speaking during the 2026 World Copper Conference, the executive addressed ongoing speculation regarding his future with the lithium extraction venture established alongside SQM.
Pacheco rejected any attempt to link his management to current political tensions. "This is a political discussion that does not involve me. I am the Chairman of Chile's most important company. I am not a politician and, therefore, I will focus on fulfilling my role through institutional and corporate channels," he stated.
Sulfuric acid supply in mining
The executive also addressed the upcoming suspension of sulfuric acid exports from China, a measure set to take effect in May. This chemical is a critical component in the leaching processes used in copper mining.
While the measure is putting pressure on the industry, Pacheco noted that the primary impact will be felt in Africa. Regarding the domestic situation, he assured that Chile holds sufficient reserves to manage the transition.
"The industry is well-supplied through 2026 because an advance purchase was made three months ago at the previous price," the executive explained. This proactive purchasing strategy is designed to mitigate short-term dependency on Asian supplies.
