The Dr. Simi character has evolved from a mere advertising mascot into a pillar of popular culture and a driver of commercial diversification. According to a report by expansion.mx, the brand has successfully expanded its reach far beyond pharmaceuticals, integrating itself into the fashion and accessories sectors with recent launches such as Crocs-style footwear.
The brand's growth strategy is built upon the creation of an icon that fosters an emotional connection with the public. According to Víctor González Herrera, current CEO of Farmacias Similares and a member of the Grupo Por Un País Mejor, the idea stemmed from a family vision inspired by the magic of theme parks.
“Mr. González wanted Farmacias Similares to have a mascot that represented the company's values and, much like Disney characters, could connect with people in a special way,” the executive told the publication.
Diversification and Global Presence
The company's business model is no longer limited to the sale of generic drugs. The brand has implemented high-level strategic alliances, most notably its collaboration with The Walt Disney Company in late 2024 to introduce the special edition “Dr. Simi Jedi Fan."
This consumer phenomenon is also reflected in the production of physical merchandise. At the CINIA factory located in Cholula, Puebla, a 30-step process is used to create 'simipeluches' (plush toys), ranging from fabric cutting to detailed sewing and stuffing.
The character maintains a constant presence at massive events and on social media. Reports indicate that the mascots appear at concerts, weddings, and festivals, such as the International Balloon Festival in Guanajuato, where a hot air balloon featuring the character's image was even used in March 2025.
In terms of infrastructure, the group has ventured into experiential stores known as 'Similandia,' with locations in Mexico City's Historic Center and Coacalco. These spaces offer virtual reality services and products that extend well beyond the pharmaceutical realm.
Currently, Farmacias Similares operates more than 9,600 branches across Mexico, Colombia, and Chile. The business ecosystem of Grupo Por Un País Mejor includes medical and dental services, clinical analysis, and the SimiPet veterinary line, alongside social initiatives through the SíMiPlaneta Foundation.
